He noticed them using slings to transfer goods from his truck to ships and realised there should be a more efficient way to transfer goods from one vehicle to another.
McLean envisioned a system where a single container filled with goods could be easily lifted on and off trucks and ships. After many years of refining his container system, he finally developed the first model of steel containers in 1956.
