Driven by economic demands and industrial challenges, past inventions are often merged with modern ideas to produce empowering industry solutions. The Shipping Container Shelter is a perfect example of this; a dome-shaped weatherproof Fabric Canvas mounted onto Shipping Containers. This combination provides a versatile storage shelter facility that protects workers or equipment from harsh elements.
The Invention of the Shipping Container
We would not have Shipping Container Shelters if it were not for the invention of the shipping container. In 1937, American truck firm owner Malcolm P. McLean was observing workers unload goods. He noticed them using slings to transfer goods from his truck to ships and realised there should be a more efficient way to transfer goods from one vehicle to another.
McLean envisioned a system where a single container filled with goods could be easily lifted on and off trucks and ships. After many years of refining his container system, he finally developed the first model of steel containers in 1956.
In the years following, shipping industry leaders saw the potential of the concept and agreed to standardise the size of containers, to enable hassle-free movement of goods all over the globe. By 1969, every shipping line in the world accepted the ISO shipping container as standard.
The Shipping Container Shelter
Eventually, the versatility and universal sizing of Shipping Containers led to them becoming a desirable element in a range of modern solutions – they are often utilised as storage space or even housing.
Shipping containers also serve as a key element of Container Shelters. This type of shelter involves a polyethylene roof stretched over a curved steel frame, which is then mounted onto Shipping Containers. They are used to shelter heavy equipment, vehicles and workers during mining operations. Construction, aviation and agricultural companies also use container shelters to protect their assets from the elements.
Most container shelters are customisable and can have other accessories such as doorways and end walls. Typical construction of a container shelter consists of two ISO shipping containers separated by the roof space and closed off with one or two end walls. Having a container shelter in your workplace provides your company with a heavy-duty shelter system that is easy to relocate.
Container Shelters are a modern solution for all temporary storage requirements. They are characterised by their speed of installation, portability and versatility. Once fully assembled they become the sturdiest shelter that is cyclone-proof certified and designed based on AS1170.2.
Shipping Container Shelters: A Case Study
Many of the world’s leading mining and industrial companies and their supporting partners frequently utilise Shipping Container Shelters. These shelters are transported to site – anywhere in the world – in kit form, and can be quickly and easily assembled. They can also be dismantled and moved across site or off-site to meet changing work needs.
Take for example the giant Wheatstone LNG project in Australia’s North West. At one stage during construction, it had up to 80 DomeShelter™ Fabric Structures on-site. These could be shifted around the site and then dismantled at the completion of the construction phase, ready to move onto the next project.
