Tyrecycle stands as a leading figure in Australia’s tyre recycling industry, specialising in the collection, processing, and recycling of end-of-life tyres for more than 30 years.
With an estimated 56 million tyres being disposed of each year in Australia alone, Tyrecycle processes over 20 million of them—enough to stretch from Perth to Sydney and back.
Remarkably, 99% of tyres processed by Tyrecycle are successfully recycled and repurposed as valuable and environmentally-responsible materials such as crumb rubber and tyre-derived fuel, which is used in place of fossil fuels by high-energy users.
Tyrecycle’s new facility, the first of its kind in Australia, is strategically located in the heart of the Pilbara, strengthening partnerships within the mining sector and turning one of the industry’s most wasteful byproducts into a sustainable resource.
The Challenge
To support their expansion into Australia’s busiest mining region, Tyrecycle needed a shelter solution that not only aligned with their environmental values but met their new operational demands.
Specifically, Tyrecycle needed a shelter solution that could withstand the extreme weather conditions of the Pilbara, provide seamless access for heavy machinery, creating a comfortable working environment for staff, and align with Tyrecycle’s sustainability goals by using eco-friendly materials and providing integrated solutions for efficient water and energy management.
Additionally, the structure needed to offer durability against coastal corrosion, operational wear and tear, and provide long-term support with minimal assembly and maintenance.
The DomeShelter™ Solution
DomeShelter Australia delivered a fully engineered, cyclone-rated shelter designed to withstand the harsh Pilbara climate while supporting Tyrecycle’s heavy-duty recycling operations.
Built for durability and efficiency, the structure ensures seamless equipment access, superior climate control, and a comfortable workspace for staff—all while aligning with Tyrecycle’s sustainability goals.

Outcomes
Corrosion Resistance
- The high-tensile, hot-dip galvanized steel frame offers superior resistance to coastal corrosion, a critical consideration in the salty, humid climate. By pre-drilling fixing points before galvanizing, every component is fully weather-proofed.
Cyclone Protection
- Engineered for Cyclone Wind Region D, the post-mounted design and metal cladding provide exceptional resilience against high wind, debris and operational strain.
- The Armourtex® 400 fabric is designed with a burst strength of 5300kPA and a hydrostatic pressure rating of >250kPA enabling it to withstand blunt force impacts, like debris hurled by cyclonic winds, while also remaining completely waterproof against torrential rain.
- Its tear-stop technology also self-contains to limit further tearing and maintaining the structural integrity of the shelter to protect people and assets, even during extreme weather events.
Heat Mitigation & Comfort
- The facility incorporates high-performance fans and air louvers to support optimal airflow, improving staff comfort and protecting them against heat-related sickness.
- The Armourtex® 400 fabric tarp can also withstand temperatures up to 70°C and offers UV resistance for up to 20 years.
Operational Efficiency & Workflow
- The three large sliding metal doors provides easy access for heavy equipment, which is essential for Tyrecycle’s operations. The custom-designed endwalls include personal access doors and air louvers to improve airflow and access.
- Tyrecycle’s logo is also incorporated into the endwalls design to align the structure with the company’s visual branding.
Sustainability
- Sustainability is at the core of this solution, with recyclable materials, efficient LED lighting, and rainwater management systems.
- The Armourtex® 400 fabric used for the shelter is 100% recyclable, supporting Tyrecycle’s goal of reducing environmental impact.
- The custom gutter system further minimises water waste, allowing Tyrecycle to efficiently harness and manage rain runoff.
- Additionally, the energy-efficient LED lighting helps reduce energy costs, making the shelter more sustainable over its lifespan.
With this, DomeShelter Australia has helped Tyrecycle expand its national network of tyre recycling plants, providing sustainable outcomes for all types of tyres. Tyrecycle’s new facility will have the capacity to process over 30,000 tons of mining tyres annually, a near 30% increase, with the potential to increase their capacity in the future.
Since its completion, Tyrecycle has finalised equipment commissioning and begun delivering eco-friendly tyre disposal solutions to local mining companies.
“The new facility has been a game-changer. It has made working conditions safe and comfortable, and we’ve seen a significant increase in staff satisfaction and productivity.”
“Service was second to none. The team at DomeShelter always made themselves available.”
