DomeShelter™ Fabric Structures are innovative and versatile tensioned fabric buildings that offer a unique solution for a range of industrial applications. These Fabric Shelters comprise a durable steel frame which is covered with a heavy-duty fabric skin, creating cost-effective and highly customisable Shelter Solutions that are fully engineered and able to be rapidly deployed.
Whether you require a temporary or permanent Shelter, DomeShelter™ Structures are capable of meeting your needs. From manufacturing facilities and paint & blast booths to bulk storage and warehousing, Fabric Shelters provide a flexible solution to suit a variety of requirements. With their ability to withstand harsh weather conditions and provide a safe and pleasant working environment, DomeShelter™ Structures have become the go-to choice for many industrial operations.
In this article, we will explore the diverse potentials for DomeShelter™ Structures in the industrial space. We will discuss the unique benefits of Fabric Shelters, including their ergonomic properties and durability.
Manufacturing and Fabrication Workshops
Fabric Structures are a favourable choice for all kinds of manufacturing and fabrication workshops and facilities, with a range of unique benefits. They can be mounted on sea containers or steel posts, or constructed using a truss framework, with optimal flexibility for any required configuration. Shelters can be fully enclosed with durable Endwalls, with doors, lighting, flooring and other add-ons possible to create a fully functional workspace. Sea containers used for Container-Mounted DomeShelter™ Structures can be outfitted for extra lockable storage and/or office space.
Fabric Shelters have extensive size potential without the need for internal supports, resulting in a clear-span internal space for uninterrupted workflow. Lead time is typically significantly shorter than traditional steel buildings, even for large Shelters, providing clients with fully-functional workshops sometimes in as little as 6 weeks.
Fabric Shelter tarp is translucent, filling the inside of the Structure with bright natural light. This results in a safer and more pleasant working environment, and negates the need for artificial lighting during the day, lowering energy costs and environmental impact.
Below is an example of a very large Truss DomeShelter™ Structure, used as a Fabrication Workshop. Measuring 32m wide by 61m long, large roller doors at either end and no internal supports allows vehicle and machinery access when required, and the vast size of the Shelter gives ample room for multiple work areas, as well as equipment and material storage. The entire Structure is fully enclosed, meaning work can continue regardless of the weather, protecting staff and assets inside from the harmful effects of the elements.
Bulk Storage
Effective bulk material storage facilities need to not impair product quality nor cause disturbance to the movement of bulk materials. Steel sheds may be ineffective for bulk storage applications, due to the obstructive supports needed for larger sheds and the dark internal environment. Lead time is much longer with sheds, particularly in with current steel shortages; having to wait up to 12 months for a large steel shed is valuable time and money wasted.
DomeShelter™ Structures are the preferred solution for a number of industry leaders including Qube and Boral. Fabric Structures can be daisy-chained, resulting in a complex of interconnected Shelters for neatly laid out and separated storage of different materials that can then be clearly and easily accessed. Bulk Storage facility designs can be simple or highly customised depending on the needs of the client and the amount of material being handled.
A unique feature of Fabric Structures is their potential to be relocated to suit changing on-site conditions. Shelters are transported in kit form, easy to install and dismantle while still being durable and fully engineered to the Building Code of Australia.
Below are two examples of Fit-For-Purpose DomeShelter™ Solutions designed for Bulk Storage. A simple, open-sided solution for Boral’s Deer Park facility demonstrates a smaller-scale approach, whereas concept drawings showcasing a very large, fully-enclosed facility currently being installed for Qube in Port Hedland show one of the largest-volume Bulk Storage Shelters manufactured by DomeShelter Australia to date.
Warehousing
DomeShelter™ Structures are perfect for warehousing and material storage & handling on industrial sites. Their easy install and short lead times make it possible to set up fully-functional worksites with secure and durable storage in a matter of weeks. Once again, the unique modular design of Fabric Structures mean they can be relocated as many times as required to respond to changing needs, without causing permanent disruption to the surrounding environment.
The translucent Fabric Tarp fills the Shelter with natural light, saving on energy costs and allowing better visibility of contents. Large Fit-For-Purpose designs are available for a varied range of dimensions; no matter what configuration, safe and easy transport in and out is guaranteed.
Ausco Modular chose to install a DomeShelter™ Structure at their new Perth manufacturing yard for warehousing and handling of materials. A Fabric Shelter gave them the option to move the warehouse around site, or to other sites, if needs change in the future. Portable flooring and external concrete ballast hold-downs mean that the Shelter has no permanent impact wherever it is situated at any given time.
Paint & Blast Booths
DomeShelter™ Structures are a popular choice with many industrial clients for use as paint & blast facilities. A wide range of size options makes it easy to fit a new or additional paint and blast booth in whatever space is available on-site. Endwalls are available to fully enclose Shelters for proper containment.
DomeShelter Australia’s flagship Armourtex® 400 fabric tarp is fire-retardant and self-extinguishing when exposed to a naked flame, reducing hazard risks. BAE Systems have a number of DomeShelter™ Fabric Structures at their shipyard in Henderson, Western Australia, where applications include paint & blast booths. A Shelter Solution that is both durable and relocatable was ideal for their operations on-site.
Handling & Logistics Storage
Fabric Shelters for port, rail & road transport applications have a range of unique benefits. They can be incredibly large, up to 60m long or more, without sacrificing strength or durability. Sea containers provide lockable storage or can be outfitted as office space.
DomeShelter™ Structures are fully engineered to the Building Codes of Australia, but have significantly shorter lead times than traditional steel structures. Their unique modular design means they can be transported in kit form inside shipping containers, for easy delivery to even the most remote locations.
Merkanooka Haulage invested in a 12m wide by 30.5m long Container Mounted DomeShelter™ Structure for use as a transport hub at the extremely remote Mt Morgan mine. The Shelter protects their staff and assets from the elements, and gives them a dedicated workshop space to keep their fleet of loaders and prime movers running without the need for equipment to be transported off-site, which helps them avoid costly delays.
